Chartered Engineer? What does this mean?

The engineering profession safeguards standards through the Engineering Institutions and the Engineering Council. The three major institutions are:
 
The Institution of Civil Engineers
The Institution of Electrical Engineers
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Each Institution fulfils a three-fold purpose. It acts as a learned society by producing journals and disseminating knowledge of engineering; it acts as a qualifying body, conferring membership on those engineers who have satisfied the by-laws of the Institution; and it acts as a regulating body for the profession, requiring members to observe a code of conduct

Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering design, testing and development of aircraft and spacecraft.

Civil and Building Engineering planning, construction and maintenance of buildings and structures.

Electronic and Electrical Engineering design and development of Electronic and Electrical systems.

Mechanical Engineering design, testing and development of mechanical systems.

Architecture design, planning and testing of buildings and living spaces.
